what’s myrtle hill?

Denver's Washington Park area, particularly the eastern section, was known as Myrtle Hill in the late 19th century.

while myrtle doesn’t grow naturally in denver, the name originates from early developers Frank and carrie bailey, who operated a nursery in the 900 block of south high street and grew field crops in the adjoining green space.

In 1899, Denver embraced the City Beautiful movement, a reform philosophy that sought to counter industrial decay with monumental grandeur and lush green spaces. As part of this era, the name Myrtle Hill began to fade as city architect Reinhart Schuetze broke ground on what we now know as Washington Park, envisioning a landscape in the elegant French Country style.

just a 10 minute walk to one of america’s great public spaces—our shops at myrtle hill include 4 stores on historic south gaylord street, paying homage to our neighborhood roots.
